Opportunity Description

Temporary Cardiac Electrodes (TMEs) are used after open-heart surgery. The electrodes, which are fixed into the heart muscle, allow for measurement of cardiac activity or stimulation of the heart. The fixation in the heart muscle can be achieved in different ways, but it is designed so that the electrodes can be removed through the thorax by pulling on the lead (wire). This removal does not require an additional surgical procedure. In rare cases, however, the extraction of TMEs can cause bleeding in the heart muscle, which poses significant risks, especially for weakened patients. As part of the project, a novel fixation method is to be developed that enables effortless and therefore even safer removal of the electrodes.
