The 24/7 business of collecting, treating and safely returning society's wastewater to the environment inevitably produces residuals that require management, but can also be valuable, renewable resources. We use the term bioresources in the UK to cover the solids extracted from wastewater treatment both untreated (sewage sludge), and after further treatment and stabilisation (biosolids). Across the world, we use the term to cover recovery of a wider range of organic resources from resource-rich solid, gaseous and liquid outputs created by the water sector and adjacent sectors, industry and from similar treatment processes.
