Opportunity Description

The Opinion Editor manages all opinion and satire stories for Mustang News and reports to the Managing Editor and Editor in Chief. They lead the opinion team and ensure writers produce 2-4 stories a month. The Opinion Editor helps writers develop their pitches and edit all opinion stories before passing them off to the EIC/ME. They also edit any letters to the editor that are sent to Mustang News. 

Responsibilities: 

  • Manage and communicate with opinion team writers
  • Help writers develop pitches into fully formed stories
  • Keep track of all stories (deadlines, graphics, etc) in Trello 
  • Edit all stories for AP format, grammar, spelling, flow, and comprehensibility 
  • Stay knowledgeable of news stories that may warrant an opinion story 
  • Attend editorial meetings and lead Opinion breakout meetings on Sunday
  • Select 2-3 stories to be considered for monthly print issues 
  • Assign graphics to be made by designers
