The Surgical Assistant in surgery collaborates with the surgeon and the health care team in performing a safe operation with optimal outcomes for the patient. The Surgical Assistant practices in collaboration with and at the direction of the surgeon during the intra-operative experience. The Surgical Assistant may take a scrub rolewhen not needed as a first assistant. SCOPE OF PRACTICE: The Surgical Assistant may: Handle tissue. Provide exposure. Use instruments. Suture. Provide homeostasis. With on site supervision the Surgical Assistant may: Prepare and administer injections limited to intradermal subcutaneous and intramuscular deltoid gluteal vastus lateralis) to include small amounts of Local Anesthetic.
